Basant Panchami is one of the famous festivals of India. The vagdevi Saraswati is considered as 'Brahmaswaroopa' and governs 'kaamdhenu' and other deity powers. She is the manas-putri of Lord Brahma and is considered as the deity of knowledge and wisdom. Bestowed with the unbelievably divine properties, the Goddess should be offered prayers on panchami tithi of magha month according to Hindu calendar. 'Basant Panchami' is also known by the name of 'Vagishwari Jayanti' or 'Shri Panchami'. People sanctified with the blessings of Goddess Saraswati are extremely intelligent and are very sharp. There are countless people who pray Goddess Saraswati as their divine being. The grand personalities like rishi Valmiki, rishi Vashishtha, rishi Vishwamitra, rishi Saunak and rishi Vyas belongs to this category as they were bestowed with her grace.

The month is also considered highly beneficial for taking bath at holy places. If you are going to visit the temple, you should first recite 'Gayatri mantra' followed by the mantra – “Om Aem Hrim Kleem Mahasaraswati Devyae Namah”

This day, most of the ladies wear yellow clothes. This festival is an indication of arrival of spring season. Colourful and fragrant flowers bloom all over. People enjoy flying kites. “Yatha woo devibhagwaan brahma lokpitamah
Twaam parityajya no tishthagn tatha bhav varprada
Veda shastrani sarvani nrityagitadikam charet
Vaditam yat twaya devi tatha me santusiddhyah
Lakshmiverdawara rishtigori tushtiha prabhamatih
Aitabhih parihattanurishtabhirma saraswati
Thereby after following the above mentioned procedure, one should take their meals with peace without uttering any word from their mouth. On 'Basant Panchami', people not only wear yellow clothes but prefer eating yellow coloured meals too. Yellow coloured rice, yellow laddos made up of besan and saffron kheer are some of the prominently eaten dishes. The lady of the house distributes laddoos and jujube fruit as prasaada.
In Mathura, on this day, a fare is organised at the Durvasa rishi's temple. All temples and their idols are adorned with new clothes. Thereafter they are embellished with beautiful ornaments and garlands. Temples are crowded and delicious sweets as prasaada are offered to everybody. At many places, from the very same day, people start singing holy songs too as it is an indication that 'Holi' festival is on its way. 'Basant Panchami' is a traditional festival of Brij and residents of this place wear mustard yellow coloured clothes without fail.
